The Zine Hotspot was established this year by Killian O’ Dwyer and Cork Printmakers for the FIRST EDITION Print Symposium and has developed into a successful partnership to promote the print work of independent designers, publishers and artists based throughout Ireland. Taking initiative from the growing general interest in zines and small publications globally, the Zine Hotspot was created to provide an opportunity for artists to engage with the people of Cork City and to share their designs and influences. Zines and other small publications have become well-known for their ability to discuss wider aesthetic, political and social issues and for communicating their ideas and interpretations of contemporary culture to an engaged audience. The Zine Hotspot at Waterstones offers similar insights into the practices and creative thinking of contemporary Irish bookbinders. It offers unique work aimed at a range of budgets and provides you with a wonderful way to support artists and become familiar with their work. The opportunity to purchase handmade and quality publications from the makers is an experience not to be missed. The Zine Hotspot includes a custom-built display unit, which was designed and constructed to compliment the appearance and curation of all accompanying publications. There will also be a facilitator on hand who can talk you through the different artists involved in the project and answer any questions you may have.
