Four students from CIT have been honoured with an international undergraduate award, one of the most prestigious in the world.
Sometimes known as a 'Junior Nobel Prize', the Undergraduate Awards (UA) is the world's largest academic awards programme, recognising excellent research and original work across the sciences, humanities, business and creative arts.
The Undergraduate Awards (UA) recently announced its 2015 winners and highly commended entrants, and four students from Cork Institute of Technology are included.
Cited as the ultimate champion of high-potential undergraduates, the Undergraduate Awards 2015 programme received 5,117 submissions from undergraduates in 255 universities across 39 countries. Winners are the top performers in each of the 25 categories.
CIT Crawford College of Art and Design (CCAD) student Rachel Doolin, won the visual art and design category for her work 'Promethean Illusions' said: "I created this series of work for my degree show and it examines humanity's continual pursuit to improve or manipulate nature to suit an industrial mode," she said.
The three highly commended entrants from CIT are Brian Hand for the engineering and built environment category; Angela Gilmour, for the music, film, theatre and art history category; and Sinéad Walshe, for the visual arts and design category.
Overall, CIT ranked in the top 50 for its students' performance in the 2015 UA programme.
Catherine Fehilly, head of CIT CCAD said: "We're thrilled about the success of our students in this huge, international arena and very proud of their achievements. To have three CIT CCAD students amongst the finalists was amazing and then for Rachel to win her category outright has really been the crowning glory on an exceptional summer of good news stories for our graduating class of 2015."
"This is a fantastic achievement for CIT and its undergraduates," added UA's executive director Louise Hodgson. "Only the very top students from each university can submit their coursework, and the Undergraduate Awards identifies the very best of the best. With over 5,000 submissions, the competition was extremely tough."
The annual UA global summit takes place in Dublin on 10-13 November.
