The Pyramiden Series


The Pyramiden Series addresses current issues regarding land possession and immigration in Svalbard, the Arctic Archipelago governed by Norway, in accordance to the Svalbard Treaty.


The Svalbard Treaty

The Svalbard archipelago is unique in that it has visa-free status. Anyone can live and work there if they have the ability to support themselves. According to Svalbard

Treaty any signatories from 46 countries can engage in commercial activities, historical coal mining. Russia exercised its right to land position in 1927 by purchasing the mining town of Pyramiden. The Russian coal town was mainly abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, the Russians maintain a presence there for the purpose of holding a claim on the land.
